Year 8 HPV Parent/Carer Letter – January 2024
Dear Parent/Guardian
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for boys and girls
The HPV vaccine that protects against several types of cancer is being offered to your child at school. As of 1st September 2023, the HPV vaccine will be given as one injection in the upper arm, this is usually given in Year 8.
The HPV vaccine helps protect your child against the human papillomavirus (HPV), this virus increases the risk of developing some cancers later in life, such as
- Cervical cancer
- Some mouth and throat cancers
- Some cancers of the anus and genital areas
The HPV vaccine does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
The leaflet https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hpv-vaccine-vaccination-guide-leaflet

It is important for you to discuss and complete the consent form with your child. You should complete the consent form as soon as possible. Please do this even if you don’t want your child to receive the vaccination. Please be aware that if we do not receive a consent informing us of your wishes, each young person may be assessed on an individual basis and invited to self consent for the vaccination providing they can demonstrate an understanding of the vaccination due. This is in line with the Gillick Competency Framework.
