Academy Council

Governance within a multi-academy trust

Hans Price Academy is part of the Cabot Learning Federation, a multi-academy trust that is responsible for a number of academies across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.  Governance for a multi-academy trust operates at two levels.  At trust level, there is a Board of Directors.  The directors are accountable to the Department for Education and external government agencies, including the Charity Commission, for the quality of the education the trust provides and the effective use of the associated academy funding. They are required to have systems in place through which they can assure themselves of quality, financial probity, safety and good practice. The Board is provided assurance on a number of these areas through various sub-committees, as shown in the diagram below. Visit the CLF website for more information about the board.

At a local level, each academy has an Academy Council comprising of up to 13 Academy Councillors.  Academy Councils are responsible for holding Principals and their leadership teams to account for the quality and effectiveness of the academic experience of the students under their care with the aim of securing effective school improvement.  They do this through monitoring performance against an annual academy improvement plan, through monitoring risks and responses to risks, and by overseeing systems and processes for the safeguarding of children and the health, safety and wellbeing of academy staff.

Hans Price Academy Council

The Academy Council at Hans Price Academy is made up of:

David Jordan – Chair of Hans Price Academy Council

I am very proud to be the Chair of Hans Price Academy Council and really enjoy the opportunity to work with a strong team of fellow councillors in supporting the school on its exciting journey to becoming the most improved school in North Somerset.

My wife and I recently retired to Hutton.  Having been involved in schools and education all my working life I felt I wanted to use some of that knowledge and experience to support my local secondary school and offered myself to Hans Price Academy.  I have been most impressed with the positive attitude & behaviour of the pupils and with the dedication & hard work of the staff & the leadership team.

It is clear that the school is making excellent progress in its endeavours to raise standards and I am delighted to support the staff in their endeavours to encourage every student to achieve the very best they can – they are given so many opportunities in which to grow in confidence and make progress.

Our job as an Academy Council is to be a critical friend to the school and challenge the Principal to ensure that every student is safe and given the support to achieve the best that they can possibly can.  We scrutinise every aspect of school life and leave no stone unturned!

Hans Price Academy is an excellent school and its future is bright.  I am proud to be associated with its progress.
