Uniform Expectations

Dear Parents and Carers,

Hans Price Academy Uniform

Uniform is a vital part of our school’s identity and an expression of our ‘Ready To Learn’ values. It reinforces who we are as a community and allows our students to feel pride in their school. It also ensures equity among young people, so students and their parents/carers do not have to feel pressure to purchase expensive branded items. It prepares students for life after school, when many will have to dress smartly and follow a dress code for work.

As we return to a full sense of normality, after the disruption of the Covid pandemic, it is time for us to clarify our uniform expectations for students and parents/carers. We have not made any significant change to our policy; instead, we would like to emphasise existing rules, and explain the support that the school offers in order that all our students are able to be in 100% correct uniform, every day. We are also responding to some more recent changes in fashion which have impacted on uniform and appearance in school.

The uniform information on our website has now been updated. Please visit this site for further information or see Uniform Booklet 08.04.2022

I would like to draw your attention to:

  • Trousers, skirts, and shorts must be tailored. We do not allow leggings, joggers, jeans, lycra-style skirts, or sports shorts. We do not allow miniskirts.
  • Jumpers are optional and should be worn with a blazer, not instead of. They must be plain, with no visible logo or branding.
  • School shoes are the only acceptable footwear. We do not allow trainers (even leather, Air Force 1 style trainers) or boots.
  • Socks should be plain, black and either knee or ankle length. We do not allow over-the-knee socks.
  • All students must wear a school tie, with 7 light-blue stripes showing.

With regards to hair, make up and jewelry,

  • Students may wear a watch (but not a smart watch), a single ring and a single pendant necklace which should be tucked inside their collar. They may also wear a single pair of stud or small sleeper earrings, in the lobe only.
  • We are now adding to the acceptable jewelry, a single, plain silver, gold, or transparent plastic nose stud.
  • Nose rings, including septum rings, or any other facial piercings are not allowed.
  • All jewellery must be removed for PE lessons. We cannot make exceptions for students with recent piercings.
  • Students may wear natural looking make up. False eyelashes are not allowed.
  • Students may have painted nails, but false nails or nail extensions are not allowed.
  • Unnatural hair colours (e.g., blue, pink or any two-tone hair styles) are not allowed.

The principal’s decision on acceptable uniform is final.

If a student arrives at school with the incorrect uniform, their College Leader or a member of the senior leadership team may:

  1. provide a change of uniform for the day.
  2. contact parents to arrange for the correct uniform to be brought to school, or for the student to go home to change.
  3. send the student to R5 to work for the day.
  4. send the student to R5 for breaks and lunchtimes until the correct uniform is restored.

We have a large selection of uniform items, including shoes, to lend to our students. All items are laundered after use. If you are struggling to provide uniform items for your child/ren and would like to discuss a longer-term loan of items, please do contact your child’s College Leader. We are pleased to be able to support all our students to have full school uniform. This support is not necessarily limited to those families in receipt of benefits.

Finally, I would like to share the principles that underpin our school uniform rules. These are:

  1. Maintain a healthy, safe school environment
  2. Ensure all students can fully participate in all learning activities
  3. Ensure a unified and equitable school community
  4. Protect childhood
  5. Ensure that sexist or trans phobic attitudes cannot persist
  6. Prepare students for dress codes in the modern workplace

Thank you for your continuing support for our students and academy.

Yours sincerely

Mrs H. Jones

Interim Principal
